Did you
know? . . .
All new ice
skates should be sharpened! Skates should be sharpened on a
regular basis - every 4 - 6 hrs. of skating. To prevent rust on
blades always dry skate blades before putting away.
. . . The skate sharpening industry
standard is to sharpen skates with a 1/2 inch hollow. As a
hockey player's skating skills increase some choose to change that hollow to
3/8 inch. Though the skate blade is completely sharpened at
either depth, some skaters feel that the 3/8 inch sharpening gives
them more "bite" or "grab" in the ice.
Did you know that former Boston
Bruin star and Colorado Avalanche Stanley Cup winner, Ray Bourque, had
his skates sharpened during every intermission of every game
throughout his career. Considering that the skates were
sharpened before each game and practice as well as these between
period sharpenings . . . it's amazing that the team's equipment
manager had time to do anything else . . . hopefully Mr. Bourque gave
him a good tip at the end of each session!
. . . Have you recently purchased new
hockey skates or new blades for your old skates? Are you having
trouble maneuvering the way you usually do? Does your balance
seem "off"? Maybe your skates need a custom radius.
By changing the radius of a skate blade
forward or backward you can move the balance point of the steel where
it touches the ice. This allows for greater maneuverability,
better balance and tighter turns.
For questions about skate radius call or
stop by the ice arena and speak to DJ Whitten or Rob Carrier.
